What Is Emancipation?

Emancipation is a legal process that gives you the rights and responsibilities of an adult before you turn 18. That means you make your own decisions about school, work, health care, and housing, but you’re also responsible for supporting yourself.

Who Can Get Emancipated?

To be eligible, you usually need to:
  • Be at least 16
  • Show you can support yourself financially
  • Have a stable place to live
  • Go through a court process and get a judge’s approval
